• Oil cooler seal leak (CRITICAL): MOST IMPORTANT ISSUE: Oil cooler seals leak — oil enters the V of the engine and can drip onto the hot turbo/exhaust. FIRE RISK. Also contaminates coolant with oil. Check for oil residue in the engine valley. The repair requires intake manifold removal and is labor-intensive.
• Swirl flap actuator failure: Intake swirl flap actuator rod breaks — causes limp mode. If swirl flap debris enters engine, catastrophic damage possible. Many owners delete the swirl flaps.
• Turbo actuator (electronic): Electronic turbo actuator fails — causes limp mode and reduced power. OEM replacement is expensive but aftermarket rebuilds available.
• Diesel injector seal / black death: Injector seals leak exhaust gases — creates black carbon 'tar' around injectors (called 'black death'). If caught early, seal replacement is cheap. If ignored, injector extraction becomes very expensive.
• DPF clogging (short trips): City-only driving clogs the DPF. Forced regeneration or replacement may be needed.
• Car is 18 years old — expect age-related wear: rubber seals, bushings, water pump, AC compressor

• IMPORTANT: Mercedes OM642 3.0 V6 diesel has a KNOWN oil cooler seal leak issue. Oil leaks into the engine valley and can drip onto hot exhaust/turbo components — FIRE RISK. Check for oil residue in the engine valley. Budget €800-2,500 for oil cooler reseal. This should be done preventatively.
• Vehicle is 15+ years old. Age-related issues: rubber seals/hoses degrade, electrical connectors corrode, suspension bushings wear. Not specific to any engine, but expect €500-1,500/year in age-related maintenance beyond normal service items.
• Mercedes OM642 3.0 V6 diesel with 120k+ km has two major known issues: (1) Swirl flap linkage failure — plastic/metal rod breaks, debris can enter engine. Emergency repair €800-2,000. (2) Oil cooler seal leak — oil mixes with coolant, can destroy the engine if not caught early. Repair €600-1,500. Also check for turbo actuator wear and DPF condition. Despite these issues, the engine itself is mechanically strong when properly maintained.
• Any car with 200k+ km requires extra scrutiny. At this mileage: suspension components are worn (bushings, ball joints, shocks), seals and gaskets are hardened, electrical connectors corrode, and major components approach end-of-life. For luxury cars (BMW, Mercedes, Audi) the cost of 200k+ km maintenance can exceed the car's value. Always get a pre-purchase inspection (PPI) and budget 15-25% of purchase price for immediate maintenance.
